Cono Sur

Our Story

Cono Sur Vineyards & Winery was founded in 1993, with the vision of producing premium, expressive and innovative wines. Our name refers to the company’s geographic position: it represents wines proudly made in South America’s Southern Cone, on whose western edge lays Chile and its gifted wine valleys. Right from the start Cono Sur applied new ideas and technology to winemaking traditional methods.

Our goal is to create incredible and inspiring Chilean wines.

The source of our inspiration

Four important geographic bodies surround the Chilean wine growing region: the Andes Mountains to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Atacama Desert (the driest on earth), to the north and ancient glaciers to the south. These natural barriers essentially isolate Chile and for centuries have protected our vineyards. Other determining factors, such as abundant luminosity, significant daily temperature variation, dry weather during ripening season and fresh Andean irrigation water contribute to the production of pure and wholesome grapes.

Our pinot noir project

Our ‘Pinot Noir project’ started in 1999, with the aim of producing the best Pinot Noir in Chile: unique, expressive and proud of its New World roots, while vinified according to the Burgundian tradition. Our Pinot Noir grapes are harvested by hand and carefully destemmed. The fruit then undergoes carbonic maceration at low temperatures and is later foot trodden, followed by manual cap immersion to enhance colour extraction. After fermentation the wine ages for approximately 14 months in new French oak.

Thinking Green

In 1998 we began implementing the decision to switch to sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agriculture, integrated vineyard management and several carbon footprint reduction projects have taken us to the forefront of environmentally friendly winemaking around the world. The idea is to avoid, as much as we can, the use of non-natural elements through the presence of geese, sheep, insects and plants. The environment becomes a self-regulating system, and our fruit is cultivated in a cleaner, healthier and happier way.

Our Winery

Located in Chimbarongo, in the midst of Colchagua Valley, Cono Sur’s winery and cellar are equipped with cutting edge technology and provide our talented oenological team with every available tool to produce the best wines. The infrastructure at the winery is designed to allow the delicate handling of grapes and wine. Today, Cono Sur’s winery has a total capacity of 12 million litres in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Our aging cellar, which holds up to four thousand barrels, is both temperature and humidity controlled.
